St Marie's Catholic Primary School

At St Marie’s Catholic Primary School, we believe it is important for our children to develop a good understanding of the Liturgical Year and to experience the richness of the Church’s celebrations throughout the year. The Liturgical Calendar helps us to journey through the life of Jesus, from Advent and Christmas, through Lent and Easter, to Pentecost and beyond. We celebrate in many ways through prayer and worship, Masses, liturgies, music, artwork, class activities and opportunities to learn about Mary and the saints.

Throughout school, our displays and classroom focus tables reflect the different seasons of the Liturgical Year. These provide a visual reminder of where we are in the Church’s year and help children to recognise the meaning of the different liturgical colours. They encourage discussion, reflection and prayer, helping our children to understand that our faith is something we live and celebrate together.

The Liturgical Colours

• Purple/Violet – Advent and Lent: Preparation, prayer and reflection.

• White/Gold – Christmas and Easter: Joy, celebration, light and new life.

• Green – Ordinary Time: Growth in faith and following Jesus.

• Red – Pentecost and Martyrs: The Holy Spirit, love and sacrifice.

• Rose/Pink – Gaudete and Laetare Sundays: Joy and hope during Advent and Lent.

Through celebrating the Liturgical Year together, we aim to nurture a deeper love of God, strengthen our children’s sense of belonging to the Catholic Church and help them to grow as confident, compassionate and faithful young people.
