At St Marie’s Catholic Primary School we aim to develop a fun, high quality physical education curriculum that inspires all pupils to succeed and realise their sporting potential. We aim to develop individual performance and competitive participation through an extensive range of extra curricular activities as well as P.E sessions. We provide opportunities for all pupils to become physically confident whilst supporting health, fitness and well-being. All children will have the opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that build character and embed Premier League values of being ambitious, inspiring, connected and fair. PE at St Marie’s is an imperative part of the curriculum, which develops a need for being physically active, leading healthy lifestyles, positive growth mind set and the resilience to persevere with activities that may once have been difficult. We are passionate about teaching the children how to co-operate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equality of play to embed lifelong values.
Pupils St Marie’s Primary School will participate in two weekly high quality PE and sporting activities. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports to ensure all children develop the fundamental skills, confidence, tolerance and the appreciation of their own and others’ strengths and weaknesses. Progression of skills are used to plan, ensuring skills are embedded and built upon each year. We provide opportunities for all children to engage in extra-curricular activities before, during and after school, in addition to competitive sporting events. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also well-being.
The majority of children achieve age related expectations in Physical Education at the end of their cohort year. Evidence for this is gathered through pupil voice, observations and ongoing formative assessment. At the end of each academic year teachers and Wigan Athletic coaches assess children against age related expectations. This is then communicated to parents and governors.
Children lead healthy lifestyles, excel in personal performance and compete on a competitive level, both inter and intra school.
The majority of children learn to swim the required 25m by the end of Key Stage 2.
Children are able to enjoy sports in many ways – either in a competitive environment, participating for fun or watching and evaluating.
Our high quality, inclusive and competitive curriculum means we have been awarded Platinum School Sports Award 2019.
